A longtime favorite of windsurfers and surfers alike, as well as a popular spot with the fishing crowd, Abreojos somehow remains a quiet, somewhat unchartered destination. In July 2007 the town’s waterfront received a makeover with the installation of new pavement and streetlamps along its malecón.
The town has a Telecomm office for long-distance calls and a Western Union.
Though most travelers who come to Abreojos choose to camp, the town does offer one good lodging, Hotel Chelo’s (on town’s main unnamed road, tel. 615/620-4515, US$35–40). Chelo’s also has a bar/restaurant, open daily. Chelo herself is a good source of local information as well as a key player in a local movement to improve life in Abreojos in many ways. Her organization, MEAPA (Mujeres En Acción Punta Abreojos), is active on a variety of issues, from ecological conservation and beach cleanup to women’s issues and town-wide swim and surf camps. For travelers who want to donate their time or money to a good cause, Chelo is a great person to contact (tel. 615/104-2139).
Two other eateries are usually open: Lonchería Las Palmas (no tel., lunch daily, mains US$5), on the malecón, is open during the day only and serves tasty fish tacos and other basic Mexican staples.
A couple of doors down, with Speedy Gonzalez painted on the front wall, is Antojitos Juanita (no tel., nightly, US$5), which opens for typical antojitos at night.
For groceries, bread, and other basic supplies, friendly Super Zuniga (on town’s main road, no tel., 9 A.M.–6 P.M. daily) is well stocked.
