Stylistically it’s not Las Vegas—¡gracias a Dios!—but Viña [1]’s Casino Viña del Mar (Av. San Martín 199, tel. 0322/500600, www.casinodevinadelmar.cl [2]) is still the place where risk addicts can fritter away their finances on bingo, cards, roulette, slots, and other money-losing diversions (those with an elementary knowledge of statistics and probability can limit themselves to dinner, drinks, and live entertainment). Amazingly, the construction of this 1930s landmark, on the Marga Marga’s north bank, took just nine months.
Open from 6 p.m. into the wee hours, the casino charges a US$5 cover for those visiting the main floor (formal attire is the rule). For bingo and the slots (known in Spanish as tragamonedas, “coin-swallowers”), hours start at noon or 2 p.m.
