Santiago [1]’s theater scene is among the continent’s liveliest, but even in the regions live theater has an audience. Conventional theater plays venues such as Santiago’s Teatro Municipal and Providencia [2]’s Teatro de la Universidad de Chile, but there’s an alternative theater scene elsewhere in Barrio Bellavista, parts of Providencia, and even otherwise staid, middle-class Ñuñoa [3].
One of Chile’s most popular plays is La Negra Ester, a prostitute’s story written by Roberto Parra (1921–1995), a musician brother of Violeta and Nicanor Parra. Since its debut in 1988, more than three million theatergoers have seen the play in various venues.
