The relatively upscale barrios of Los Yoses and San Pedro sprawl eastward for several kilometers. Although they offer few sightseeing attractions, the barrios have boomed in recent years as hubs for dining and entertainment, particularly in Barrio Dent—the zone between Rotonda de la Bandera and Rotonda de la Hispanidad, west of the University of Costa Rica.
Immediately northeast of downtown, the suburb of Barrio Escalante hosts the Museo Dr. Rafael Angel Calderón Guardia (Avenida 11, Calles 25/27, tel. 506/2221-1239, www.mcjdcr.go.cr/patrimonio [1], 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Sat., free), celebrating the life of the former president (whose term was 1940–1944).
Templo Votivo del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (tel. 506/2222-6886), on Avenida 8 three blocks east of the Tribunales de Justicias, is a stunning contemporary Catholic church worth the visit to admire its stained glass.
