Since it opened in the former Hotel Washington in 2009, the W Washington has been overshadowed by the buzz over its cocktail lounge, POV [2], that draws the well-heeled to its rooftop terrace.
When POV opened it reportedly caused a stir with the Secret Service, mainly for its direct views of the White House [3] lawn and helicopter pad (the Hotel Washington was also known for its rooftop bar featuring the same stunning views with the same security concerns).
The W has its own unique allure, mixing the brand’s signature “so hip it hurts” decor with the historic touches of the previous occupants. As with all W properties, guests enter the hotel through the Living Room (the lobby), where they are greeted by fit young assistants and the beat of electronica playing over the sound system. In the evenings, this area turns into a cocktail bar with pulsing DJ-driven music.
The hotel’s 317 guest rooms are equipped with sleek, modern furnishings and are decorated in cool tones—whites, grays, and blues. Some feature digital fireplaces and views of the Washington Monument [4], the Lincoln [5] and Jefferson Memorials [6], and the Potomac River.
The W Washington also has the city’s only Bliss Spa.
