One of the area’s most popular trails, the Capital Crescent is a former railroad bed, once home to the Georgetown branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, with a slow gradient rising from the city to Bethesda, Maryland, passing alongside the Potomac River, over historic railroad bridges, winding through woods, and past the manicured lawns of upscale suburbs.
The trail is paved for nearly 11 miles, and in some spots features an adjacent stone-dust trail for runners. Past Bethesda, it is surfaced in crushed stone, a three-mile addition that goes to Lyttonsville, Maryland.
