It’s hard to imagine just by looking at it, but the entirety of this European-style theater relocated 66 meters (700 ft.) to the southeast between 2002 and 2004 to make way for the Yan’an elevated highway.
The hall started life as the Nanking Theatre in 1930, designed by Chinese architect Fan Wenjiao. It became the Beijing Cinema after the creation of the PRC in 1949 and was given its current name 10 years later.
Today it sits in its own special “music park” inside the boundaries of People’s Park [2]. Thanks to its excellent acoustics, it attracts classical, popular, and chamber performers from all over the world.
