METRO: Tian’anmen East (Line 1)
Part of the Chi’enmen 23 complex in the Legation Quarter [2], the Beijing Center for the Arts occupies the Qing Dynasty U.S. Embassy building, built by Sid H. Nealy in 1903. The two-floor exhibition hall covers 1,600 square meters (17,000 sq. ft.), and there’s an on-site repertory theater called Black Box that holds regular performances.
Art expert Weng Ling, the partner of developer Handel Lee, curates the space. The pair also developed the Shanghai Gallery of Art at Three on the Bund.
Beijing Center for the Arts opened in 2008 and aims to join China’s art community with the general public.
