The breakfast spot of choice, Restaurante Carolina (tel./fax 506/2735-5185, 7 A.M.–10 P.M. daily, $2–10) serves a good granola with fruit and yogurt, plus other American-style breakfasts. It has cheap casados for lunch, and the inexpensive menu ranges to chicken cordon bleu and fettucine alfredo.
Juanita’s Mexican Bar & Grill (tel. 506/2735-5056, 6 A.M.–midnight daily, below $8), run by a real Mexican woman, serves hearty fare in atmospheric surrounds. The menu includes fish-and-chips and burgers.
Pizza Mail-It (tel. 506/2735-5483, 4–10:30 P.M. daily), next to the post office, has a delightful, relaxed open-air terrace. Nadia and Fabio are great hosts, and sure make a fantastic pizza.
Worth the drive to Playa Platanares is
Pearl of the Osa (11 A.M.–9 A.M. daily, $2–15) at Iguana Lodge, with a beautiful hardwood bar and spacious shaded patio with hammocks. It serves ceviche, chicken fingers, burritos, burgers, tuna melts, casados (set lunches), and seafood dishes. Nonguests can also make reservations for gourmet family-style dinners at Iguana Lodge, with its revolving menu of regional specials. Friday night is pasta night, with live music and dancing.
There’s a bakery (panadería) 50 meters south of the soccer field.
