Railway lines run from San José to Puntarenas on the Pacific and (in portions) Puerto Limón on the Caribbean. There is no regular passenger service except for commuter lines linking San José and Heredia (and soon, possibly, Cartago). Various entities keep trying to resurrect tourist service. Transportes y Ferroviarios Costarricenses (TRANSFECO, tel. 506/2258-1765, transfeco [at] hotmail [dot] com) operates sightseeing tours by train from San José to Orotina and Mata de Limón.
