Hotel Posada del Sol (Calle de los Nazarenos #17, tel. 7832-6838, $35) is housed in a pretty yellow house and has six spacious, well-furnished rooms with orthopedic beds and private hot-water bathroom. There’s laundry service and the friendly staff can help you plan onward travel throughout Guatemala.

The excellent-value Hotel Posada San Pedro (3a Avenida Sur #15, tel. 7832-3594, www.posadasanpedro.net [1], $35 d) is also stylish and comfortable, featuring 10 spotless rooms with firm beds, tile floors, wooden furnishings, attractive tile bathrooms, and cable TV. Guests also enjoy use of a living room and full kitchen. The staff here is friendly and the place is well-run with a laid back but efficient atmosphere. There’s a second location at 7a Avenida Norte #29 (tel. 7832-0718) with the same rates but slightly smaller, less attractive rooms.

Friendly Hotel Palacio Chico (4a Avenida Sur #4, tel. 7832-0406, $50 d) is conveniently situated near the central plaza and has comfortable, attractive rooms painted with faux finishes and fitted with cable TV, nice furnishings, and electric hot-water private bathrooms. Rates include a continental breakfast.

Also south of the park on the next street over, Hotel La Sin Ventura (5a Avenida Sur #8, tel. 7832-0581, www.lasinventura.com [2], $32 d) has 34 clean rooms spread out over three floors, all with private bathroom. There are excellent views of Agua Volcano from its rooftop terrace and it’s conveniently (or not, depending on how you look at it) situated near several nightlife spots, one of which is in the hotel lobby.

Hotel San Jorge (4a Avenida Sur #13, tel. 7832-3132, $53 d) has attractive rooms centered around a garden courtyard with a fountain and patio furniture. The well-furnished rooms are carpeted and have private hot-water bathroom, Guatemalan bedspreads and accents, chimney, cable TV, and reading lamps. Rates include a continental breakfast and guests enjoy free use of the nearby Porta Hotel Antigua’s sprawling swimming pool.

Hotel Santa Clara (2a Avenida Sur #20, tel. 7832-0342, $45 d) features 19 rooms, some with cable TV, and all with private bathroom, colorful decor and wooden furniture set around a courtyard. Newer rooms with less character, but slightly more cheerful, are at the rear.
