At 140 kilometers upriver from Iquitos [1] on the Río Yanayacu, Muyuna Amazon Lodge (Putumayo 163, tel. 065/24-2858, www.muyuna.com [2], three days/two nights US$414 pp) was founded in 1999 by a Peruvian couple, Analía and Percy Sánchez. Since then this lodge has developed a solid reputation for excellent guides, simple but comfortable rooms, and affordable rates.
The lodge is nestled in an interesting swath of flooded forest that has several types of monkeys, a large variety of birds, caimans, sloths, pink dolphins, and a good chance of seeing a giant otter, armadillo, or porcupine.
There are 2–6-bed bungalows with private bathrooms, and food is served buffet-style.
Guides are well spoken and energetic, willing to make late-night forays into the jungle or spend time visiting the local community of San Juan, with which Muyuna has forged an excellent relationship.
The lodge also has equipment to listen to mother dolphins whistle to their young.
