The Gera Waterfalls, once a tourist favorite, have been reduced to a trickle due to the construction of Gera hydroelectric.
But a good hike can be done all the way to the top of Morro de Calzada, an isolated, humpbacked mountain that rises above the landscape 12 kilometers from Moyobamba. There is a pleasant, two-hour walk through cloud forest to the top, past a few small waterfalls and a variety of orchids.
There are caves at both the top and bottom of the hill and an incredible panoramic view from the summit. This overlook is a launching point for hang gliders and parapent aficionados. You can also camp on the top.
Selene Tours (Serafín Filomeno 150, tel. 042/56-4471, www.selenetours.com [1]) offers tours to all the sites outside Moyobamba [2]. Roxana Díaz, the manager, is extremely helpful and you can contact her at roxanadiaz8 [at] hotmail [dot] com.
