Between May and October, a passenger train still departs on Fridays from Lima [1]’s antique Desamparados train station downtown. After climbing the steep valley above Lima it crests the Andes at 4,751 meters (nearly 15,700 feet!) and continues to Huancayo [2]. Trains return from Huancayo to Lima on Sunday evening, making for an interesting weekend outing.
Sunday excursion trains also leave the station for San Bartolomé, a country hamlet 1.5 hours by train outside Lima that is often sunny when the city is fogged in. These trains leave at 6 a.m. and return at 6 p.m. For tickets and exact departure information, contact the Desamparados train station (Ancash 201, tel. 01/361-2828, ext. 222).
