Between May and October, a passenger train still departs on Fridays from Lima ’s antique Desamparados train station downtown. After climbing the steep valley above Lima it crests the Andes at 4,751 meters (nearly 15,700 feet!) and continues to Huancayo . Trains return from Huancayo to Lima on Sunday evening, making for an interesting weekend outing.
Sunday excursion trains also leave the station for San Bartolomé, a country hamlet 1.5 hours by train outside Lima that is often sunny when the city is fogged in. These trains leave at 6 a.m. and return at 6 p.m. For tickets and exact departure information, contact the Desamparados train station (Ancash 201, tel. 01/361-2828, ext. 222).
