Every May or June, during the first big swell of the year, Punta Hermosa [1] comes alive with Peru’s annual big-wave competition. There is no fixed date for the competition and it is usually organized within a week or two—check out www.buoyweather.com [2] (you have to pay) or www.stormsurf.com [3] (free) for the right ocean conditions, or stayed tuned to www.peruazul.com [4], the country’s premier surfing website.
Otherwise nightlife is clustered around the entry to Punta Hermosa and the few pubs on the waterfront.
