The city’s biggest attraction is the Chanca fortress of Sondor, 21 kilometers outside Andahuaylas [1] on the way to Cusco [2]. The fort itself is a rather unimpressive series of hilltop terraces, with a reconstructed garrison nearby, but the view is fabulous. The fort was obviously built to protect the rich valley bottomland around Lago Pacucha.
On the other side of the fort, the valley drops thousands of feet toward the Pampa and Apurímac drainages. Lago Pacucha itself, 17 kilometers from Andahuaylas via a short cut off the main highway, has attractive marshlands, a few species of ducks, and dirt roads for walking.
On the far side of the lake, combis from Andahuaylas arrive at the town of Pacucha, which has a few restaurants. The town is best known for its annual Yawar festival.
