The discotheques Kusi Kusun (Cáceres 361) and Choza Inn (next door), are open most nights after 9 p.m. Ciné Antoon Spinoy in the Plaza de Armas shows nightly movies.
Andahuaylas [1]’s best-known festival is Fiesta de Yawar, or the Festival of Blood, which takes place at the end of July in Pacucha. A week before the event, men from the village head into the high sierra and capture several condors, using horsemeat as bait. During the festival, the condors are tied, one by one, onto the back of a bull.
Anthropologists theorize that the ensuing struggle may represent a symbolic confrontation between the Inca (condor) and the Spanish (bull). The contest ends before either animal is killed and the condor is always released back into the wild.
El Niño Jesús de Praga takes place in Andahuaylas [1] in late January. The Virgen de la Candelaria is celebrated in San Jerónimo in early February, and Nuestra Señora de Cocharcas is feted in Cocharcas on September 8.
