A path leads south from the palace [1] to El Mirador, a small temple whose name means “lookout.” Built atop a crumbling pyramid, the structure has five rooms and a high-reaching roof comb. Though substantially collapsed, the structure is still impressive for its height and complexity of its comb.
The path continues another 50 meters (164 feet) past El Mirador to the Stela of the Phallus, or “Yum Keep.” Sayil [2]'s spiritual leaders, like those of Uxmal [3] and other cities, were obsessed with the male phallus.
Here, a rather poorly executed stone panel depicts an ancient Dirk Diggler, his face and hands still partly visible, and an enormous penis hanging to his knees.
