Although you’re likely to be followed around the shop by vigilant salespeople, Yalat (Calle 39 at Calle 40, tel. 985/856-1969, 9 a.m.–8 p.m. daily) is worth a stop if you’re interested in purchasing high-end Mexican handicrafts and art. Definitely pricey—almost astronomical—the quality of the items sold is excellent.
Mercado de Artesanías (Calle 39 at Calle 44; 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 8 a.m.–2 p.m. Sun.) has a decent variety of guayaberas, embroidered huilpiles, hammocks, and other popular handicrafts. The selection isn’t very large—there are only about a dozen shops here—so be sure to bargain.
