Like accommodations, the restaurant selection in and around Xpujil [1] is pretty slim.

In Town: A classic Mexican comedor (eatery), Lonchería Lorena (Av. Siluituc between Balakbal and Av. Becán, 7 a.m.–10 p.m. Mon.–Sat., US$1–2.50) is a tiny place offering Yucatecan specialties like salbutes, empanadas, and tortas. Breakfasts are particularly tasty.

A hotel restaurant, the Mirador Maya (tel. 983/871-6005, 7 a.m.–11 p.m. daily, US$3–6) serves standard Mexican fare—nothing too notable but it’ll fill you up and it’s open late. Popular with tour groups.

Just east of the post office, Expendido de Pan San Martín (Av. Calakmul s/n, 7 a.m.–10 p.m. Mon.–Sat.) sells fresh bread and pastries—perfect for a quick snack.

Outside of Town: Río Bec Dreams (Carr. Escárcega-Chetumal Km. 142, tel. 983/124-0501, 7:30 a.m.–9 p.m. daily, US$4.50–8) offers the area’s best meals, by far. The international menu varies according to what’s fresh and available—think shrimp linguini, chicken curry, or English shepherds pie—but you can always count on excellent preparation, large portions and friendly service. For groups or special occasions, ask about arranging a full four- to five-course meal (US$23–33 per person). Box lunches also are available with advance notice, and are highly recommended for a long day at the ruins.

The Chicanná Ecovillage (Carr. Escárcega-Chetumal Km. 144, tel. 983/871-6075, 7 a.m.–10 p.m. daily, US$5–12) has a reliable though overpriced restaurant, with a large international menu.
