Anything but charming, this dusty town is the gateway to the ruins at Comalcalco [1] and to the chocolate haciendas [2]. Just 45 minutes from Villahermosa, it is rare for tourists to stay the night. If you do, no worries, there’s at least one decent hotel in town.
Near the ADO bus station in Villahermosa [3], Comali Plus (Calle Reforma at Calle Bravo) and Transportes Torruco (Calle Reforma at La Arboleda) provide identical service to and from Comalcalco. Van service runs every 20 minutes (4:30 a.m.–9 p.m. daily, US$2.50, 45 minutes). Passengers are dropped off and picked up in the center of Comalcalco.
If driving from Villahermosa, head west on Highway 180 toward the city of Cárdenas. When you come to the junction with Highway 187, take it north to Comalcalco.
