You’ll almost certainly pass through Belize District [1], whether just traveling between the cayes and the mainland, taking the time to plunge into Belize City [2], or exploring the region’s nature reserves and ruins.
A self-guided, daytime walking tour of Belize City is a must for anyone interested in the bigger picture of the country—even if you have only a few hours between bus and boat connections. You can see all the sights in one rushed day or two very relaxed ones.
Although Belize City doesn’t have the dining scene of some of the more touristy parts of the country, there are enough decent restaurants [3] and many cheap local eateries to get you stuffed by.
If you find the slow bustle of the streets and the daily swing of the bridge intriguing, stay a couple of extra days. There are dive, snorkel [4], bird-watching [5], and ruins trips [6] from the city, which has a few quality accommodations [7].
