This dot of sand and palms, close to both the reef and mangrove systems, is home to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History’s Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystems Program, which, since 1972, has produced over 800 published papers. The caye houses up to six international scientists at a time. The public is welcome to check things out, but only if you arrange something first through your host on South Water Caye [1] or elsewhere.
