Chiclayo [1] has a highly interesting Mercado de Brujos (Arica, inside the Mercado Modelo, 7 a.m.–5 p.m. daily).
Here you will find piles of all the materials used by Peru’s curanderos—shark jaws, deer legs, snakeskins, potions, scents, amulets, and huayruro (jungle beads for warding off a hex).
There are heaps of dried mountain herbs and San Pedro cacti, which, when sliced and reduced in boiling water, form a hallucinogenic drink used by shamans—and an increasing number of travelers.
Shamans can be contracted here for fortune-telling or healing sessions. But beware of sham artists or shamans who dabble in the dark side—they are everywhere and can pose a real threat to your psychic health. It is always best to make curandero contacts through a trusted source.
