The Contemporary Art Museum (Avenida San Blas, tel. 262-3380 or 262-8012, www.macpanama.org [1], 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Tues.–Sun., US$3 adult, US$1 children) is one of Panama [2]’s best and best-maintained museums. Bear in mind, though, that it doesn’t take much to reach that level in Panama.
The museum still more resembles an art gallery than a museum (many of the pieces are for sale). But it does present a reasonable cross-section of Panama’s best-known and emerging modern artists as well as some work from other parts of Latin America. It sometimes presents film series.
The museum is housed in a two-story building on the edge of the Canal Zone in Ancón [3], next to the old Ancón Elementary School and not far from the headquarters of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (Instituto Smithsonian de Investigaciones Tropicales).
