Monagrillo

Monagrillo (pop. 9,549), one of the most ancient inhabited spots on the Azuero Peninsula [1], can be reached from Chitré [2] by heading north on Avenida Pérez two kilometers from where it intersects Paseo Enrique Geenzier. Avenida Pérez runs past the Cable and Wireless office; look for the tall communications towers.

Ceramics found in this area date from at least 2500 B.C., the oldest found in Central America and among the oldest anywhere in the Americas.

There are no archaeological displays or other traces of that ancient history, but those with spare time who just like the idea of being near that much history should consider a quick drive-through.

Monagrillo does have a quaint little church with some well-preserved old homes with red-tile roofs. It’s similar to Parita [3], though not quite as scenic.

Getting to Monagrillo

The taxi ride from Chitré [2] will cost about US$1. Buses also make the run between Monagrillo and Chitré, and if it’s not too hot you can even walk it.
