For the adventurous, kayaking on San Francisco Bay is a great way to experience the famous waterway on a personal level. City Kayak (415/357-1010, www.citykayak.com [1]) has locations at both South Beach Harbor (Pier 40, Embarcadero at Townsend St.) and Fisherman’s Wharf [2] (Pier 39, slip A21).
Beginners can take guided paddles along the shoreline, getting a new view on familiar sights. More advanced kayakers can take trips out to the Golden Gate [3] and around Alcatraz Island [4]. Rental equipment is available daily 10 a.m.–7 p.m. at the South Beach Harbor location.
