Just looking for a quick snack to tide you over? Drop in at The Chestnut Bakery (2359 Chestnut St., 415/567-6777, www.chestnutbakery.com [1], Mon. 7 a.m.–noon, Tues.–Sat. 7 a.m.–6 p.m., Sun. 8 a.m.–5 p.m.). This smallish, family-owned storefront opened in 2002 and quickly drew a devoted local following.
Only a block and a half from Lombard Street [2], it’s also a perfect spot for weary tourists to take the weight off their feet and enjoy a cookie, pastry, or one of the bakery’s famous cupcakes. If you come in the morning, you’ll find scones, croissants, and other favorite breakfast pastries.
Do be aware that this is a favorite spot for locals, which means that some items sell out during each day. Come early or call ahead if you’ve got a specific goodie in mind that you just can’t live without.
