Pescadero [1] has a small but surprisingly good array of lodging options. This HI hostel has simple but comfortable accommodations, both private and dorm-style. And the locale can’t be beat! Amenities include three kitchens, free Wi-Fi, and beach access. But the best amenity of all is the cliff-top hot tub, which makes the hostel more than special.

Another option in the Costanoa Lodge and Campground (2001 Rossi Rd. at Hwy. 1, 650/879-1100, www.costanoa.com [3], camping $55/night, lodge and cabin rooms $143–400). At this eco-lodge you can do anything from pitch a tent in the campground to rent a whirlpool suite in the lodge. Other lodging options include log-style cabins with shared baths, small tent cabins with shared baths, and private rooms.

Costanoa’s many nature programs seek to educate visitors about the ecology of the San Mateo coast and the preservation efforts underway. A small general store offers s’mores makings and souvenirs. You’ll pay for the privilege of staying at Costanoa, but the location is beautiful and the eco-chic atmosphere is all the rage these days.

For a little more luxury, the Pescadero Creek Inn Bed & Breakfast (393 Stage Rd., 888/307-1898, www.pescaderocreekinn.com [4], $209–264) sits conveniently in downtown Pescadero [1], an easy walk from Duarte’s [5], the grocery stores, the local cemetery, and the creek. While the house isn’t completely soundproof, the rooms are high ceilinged and prettily appointed. The owners serve up a delectable breakfast each morning, plus wine and cheese in the afternoon. If you ask nicely, you might get a bottle of the house vintage, handmade by the owner.

If you want something unique, Pescadero [1] has lodgings available year-round. The Pescadero Creekside Barn (248 Stage Rd., 650/879-0868, www.pescaderolodging.com [6], call for rates) nestles in the loft of an old barn downtown. This studio-apartment style space sleeps two, has a TV with DVD player, a kitchen, and a clawfoot tub. The seclusion and charm make the space perfect for a romantic getaway or solitary weekend retreat.
