Wine makes many people think of high art and high culture. Accordingly, Sonoma County supports a number of theater groups that put up everything from funky black-box originals to big-budget Broadway musicals. The Sonoma County Repertory Theater (104 N. Main St., Sebastopol, 707/823-0177, http://the-rep.com [1], adults $23, children/seniors $18) sits in Sebastopol, producing a mix of beloved classics like Taming of the Shrew and A Christmas Carol, plus a generous helping of newer works such as Rabbit Hole.
While the weekend prices are reasonable, the Sonoma Rep also has “Pay What You Can” Thursdays; you walk up to the door on Thursday evening, and if tickets are left for the show, you can get in for whatever price you deem to be reasonable.
The Raven Players (115 North St., Healdsburg, 707/433-6335, www.ravenplayers.org [2], adults $18–25, seniors/students $15) ply their art in the boutique town of Healdsburg. This ambitious company stages five plays per year—primarily award-winning and established works, such as Arthur Miller’s After the Fall and Christopher Durang’s Beyond Therapy. For their last show each season, the Ravens produce a big, dramatic musical; the last two were Evita and Miss Saigon.
