It is believed that the Franciscan order of monks brought wine production to California. In their honor, the St. Francis Winery (100 Pythian Rd. at Hwy. 12, Santa Rosa, 888/675-9463, www.stfranciswine.com [1], daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m., $10–30) sells thick, rich wines that appeal to red lovers.
The estate is built in the light adobe-style with red roof of the California missions, complete with square bell tower.
Inside, visitors drink classic Sonoma Chardonnays and an array of yummy reds that show off the lush flavors of Sonoma [2] grapes in both single varietals and blends.
