Once you’re out of Yosemite Valley [1] and driving along Tioga Pass [2], you’re ready to come upon Tuolomne Meadows (about 10 miles from the eastern edge of the park, accessible by road summer only). After miles of soaring rugged mountains, it’s almost surprising to come upon these serene grassy High Sierra alpine meadows.
Brilliant green and dotted with wildflowers in spring, gradually turning to golden orange as fall approaches, the waving grasses support a variety of wildlife. Stop the car and get out for a quiet, contemplative walk through the meadows.
Or if you prefer a long trek through the backcountry, Tuolumne Meadows serves as base camp for high country backpacking [3].
