The large building that houses the visitors center for Mono Lake [1] is easy to see from Highway 395, and only a short drive from the highway. The Mono Lake Scenic Visitor Area (Hwy. 395 just north of Lee Vining on the lake side, 760/647-3044, www.monolake.org [2]) is the perfect place to start learning about Mono Lake, to start walking around the lake, and to start taking photos of the unique landscape.
The interpretive museum inside the distinctive building describes in detail the natural and human history of the lake, from the way tufa towers form to the endless litigations surrounding the lake like papery ghosts.
Walk out the back of the building to take your first closer look at the grassy meadows leading down to the shores of the lake. Talk to the staff to learn about the best hikes [3] and spots to visit, swim [4], launch a boat [4], or cross-country ski.
At the visitors center, you can also learn about various guided walks and hikes at Mono Lake [1], which can give you and your family a more in-depth look at the wonders of the area.
