Even if you’re not up to tackling the endless hiking trails [1] and deep wilderness backcountry of Big Sur [2], you can still get a good sense of the glory of this region just by driving through it. The Big Sur Coast Highway, a 90-mile stretch of Highway 1, runs along jagged cliffs and rocky beaches, through dense redwood forest, over historic bridges, and past innumerable parks.
Construction on this stretch of road was completed in the 1930s, connecting Cambria [3] to Carmel [4]. You can start out at either of these towns and spend a whole day making your way to the other end of the road. The road has plenty of wide turnouts set into picturesque cliffs to make it easy to stop to admire the glittering ocean and stunning wooded cliffs running right out to the water.
Be sure to bring a camera on your trip along Highway 1-you’ll find yourself wanting to take photos every mile for hours on end.
