Outside the Parks

The massive park complex is ringed with motels, both popular chains and more interesting independents. The Anabella (1030 W. Katella Ave., Anaheim, 714/905-1050, www.anabellahotel.com [1], $94–119) offers a touch of class along with a three-block walk to the parks. The elegant marble-clad lobby seems like it belongs closer to Downtown L.A. [2] than Downtown Disney [3]. Guest rooms are furnished with an eye toward modern, stylish decor (occasionally at the expense of practicality).

Adults looking for an overnight escape from the endless parade of kid-oriented entertainment and attractions will find a welcome respite at the Anabella. A decent restaurant, nail salon, and mini-mart sit on the hotel property, and a fairly lousy diner is right next door. You can get limited room service at the Anabella, and you can leave your car in their parking lot to avoid the expense of parking at Disneyland.

Another nice out-of-park hotel, in walking distance of Disneyland [4], is the Desert Palms Hotel & Suites (631 W. Katella Ave., 714/535-1133, www.desertpalmshotel.com [5], $180–550). Its spacious and elegant lobby welcomes visitors, the pool and spa provide fun for children and adults alike, and the many amenities make travelers comfortable. Regular rooms have one king or two queen beds, a TV, a phone, Internet access, and not a ton of room to walk around after all your luggage is crowded in with the furniture.

Bedspreads catch the eye with their bright, multicolored palm design; the rest of the decor is neutral by comparison. Guests with more discretionary income can choose from a number of suites, some designed to delight children and others aimed at couples on a romantic getaway.
