Catalina Island Museum

Another take on the history of Catalina [1] is displayed at the Catalina Island Museum (The Casino, Avalon, 310/510-2414, www.catalinamuseum.org [2], daily 10 a.m.–4 p.m., closed Thurs. Jan.–Mar., adults $4, children $1). Located on the top floor of the landmark Casino [3], this small museum makes for a great 15–30 minute culture stop in the midst of a beach vacation.

Learn about the history of the Chicago Cubs’ spring training camp on the island, the short but famed production of Catalina tile and ceramics, the World War II history of Catalina, and more. You’ll find a good-sized collection of Native American artifacts from the island’s original inhabitants, plus a huge collection of historic photos.
