The Birch Aquarium at Scripps (2300 Expedition Way, 858/534-3474, http://aquarium.ucsd.edu [1], daily 9 a.m.–5 p.m., adults $11, seniors $9, youth 3–17 $7.50) is run by the University of California at San Diego. Both children and adults love the Scripps Institute’s research and displays in this state-of-the-art aquarium complex.
For a classic beginning, view sea life from oceans the world over along the Hall of Fishes. This area includes coral reef displays from Mexico and the Caribbean, a kelp forest similar to the ones right off the La Jolla [2] coast, and the fabulous and fascinating Shark Reef.
The Art of Deception display allows visitors to see the amazing camouflaging defenses of sea creatures from various marine environments.
Kids love to splash in the Wonders of Water exhibit, and playing here is not only allowed, it’s encouraged!
