With every other storefront downtown occupied by a gallery, aimless wandering is a straight ticket to art burnout. Whether you’re just browsing or actually looking to buy, decide first what you’re most interested in—American Indian crafts, Taos Society of Artists’ work, new abstract painting—and stick with that, at least to start with.
Summer is the high season, with openings for new single-artist shows somewhere along Canyon Road [1] every Friday evening, starting around 5 p.m. and lasting until 7 or 8 p.m. In the winter, spaces usually mount survey shows that change every couple of months.
If you don’t have a car or just don’t feel like dealing with downtown parking, keep an eye out for the Art Van Go (505/570-0603, artvango [at] qwest [dot] net), a free shuttle that runs daily, visiting many of the major galleries.
