Several trails run through Jemez, but the best one for a day hike is the East Fork Trail (no. 137), which runs from Battleship Rock Picnic Area to Las Conchas. At 10 miles one-way, the full route is a bit ambitious for a full day, so it’s preferable to start the trail where it crosses Highway 4, about three miles after the highway makes its hairpin turn southeast, when you descend a bit and enter a small valley. From this point, the eastern half of the trail, about 4.5 miles one-way, is the most scenic, following a stream up through a pine forest, where wild berries grow in the summer; or you can head west one mile to Jemez Falls, where water cascades through a narrow canyon.
