You can rent canoes and kayaks at Barton Cove (Rte. 2, Gill, 413/863-9300, late May–early Sept., boat rentals: $25 up to 2 hours, $40/day, tents: $22/night), a campground on a bend in the Connecticut River within easy paddling distance of the scenic French King Gorge. The camp also provides a shuttle for longer river trips.
