The cheapest meal in town is Jack’s Hot Dogs (12 Eagle St., 413/664-9006, www.jackshotdogstand.com [1], 10 a.m.–7 p.m. Mon.–Fri.; 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Sat., $1–3), an authentic lunch counter dishing out dogs and burgers to blue-collar types who line the counter two deep at lunch time. If you are really hungry, you can enter the ongoing hot dog–eating competition—the record at press time was 30.
Though it serves creative New American cuisine,
Gramercy Bistro (24 Marshall St., 413/663-5300, www.gramercybistro.com [2], 5–10 p.m. Wed.–Mon., $18–26) lives up to the “bistro” concept, with excellent food, reasonably priced.
