The region abounds with shorter hikes. A favorite of Williams students is Pine Cobble Trail (413/458-2494, www.wrlf.org [1]), a 2.1-mile all-season climb beginning on North Hoosac Road and rising 2,000 feet to a quartzite outcropping with fantastic views of the valley.
In North Adams [2], Natural Bridge State Park (413/663-6392 or 413/663-8469), at the intersection of Routes 2 and 8, has a short hike from a rock quarry to a pint-sized natural bridge.
