As soon as you cross the border into Great Barrington, the landscape changes, with trees and picket fences giving way to mill buildings along the Housatonic River and rusting trains on disused railroad tracks. The influx of summer guests to the Berkshires has put a new shine on a delightful downtown, making it reminiscent of what downtowns used to look like before Wal-Mart and shopping malls forced mom-and-pop stores out of business. Upscale restaurants and shops cater to the symphony and theater crowds.
