One of the most competitive members of the Ivy League, Brown is known for its rigorous but non-traditional approach to liberal arts education. Translation: encouragement of interdisciplinary research and, among other things, allowing courses to be taken as a pass/fail option rather than a standard letter grading system.
The tradition of exceptional faculty is mirrored by the school’s other resources, including four libraries—one of which holds the world’s preeminent collection of Americana from before 1825.
Apart from that, the leafy hillside campus (Admission Office, 45 Prospect St., 401/863-1000, www.brown.edu [1]) makes for an enjoyable stroll, especially during the early fall when students lounge in the quads as if posing for a calendar of brilliant minds at work.
