Biking in the country doesn’t get any better than the 100-plus-mile Kingdom Trails Network (Kingdom Trail Association, P.O. Box 204, East Burke, 802/626-0737, www.kingdomtrails.org [1]) of old carriage paths, railroad right-of-ways, and forest trails that have been stitched together for two-wheeled pleasure. There may be no better way to really gain an appreciation for the size and beauty of the Northeast Kingdom [2].
The Trails have something for every difficulty, from the precipitous Freeride Trail that carves its way down the side of Burke Mountain to the gentler curves of Darling Hill, where you’ll have plenty of farmhouses and cows for company. The best part: no cars in sight. The trails leave from the village area in East Burke, just behind Burke General Store.
