In summer, Shakespeare in the Valley (Town Square, Waterville Valley, 603/726-0098, www.shakespeareinthevalley.com [1]) bellies up to the bard at the Mary Devlin/Margaret Harmony “Women of Grace” Theatre Under the Stars in Town Square. With minimal sets and props, no sound amplification, and actors frequently performing in, with, or behind the audience, the troupe seeks to mirror Elizabethan performance traditions as closely as possible.
The downstairs lounge of Lucky Dog Tavern (53 Main St., Plymouth, 603/536-2260, www.luckydogtavernandgrill.com [2], 4:30 p.m.–1 a.m. Mon.–Thu., 11:30 a.m.–1 a.m. Fri.–Sun.) operates as a music club and bar: Open mic nights are every Thursday, DJs come in every Saturday, and live bands play everything from jazz to ’50s swing every other night.
Can’t stand to miss the game? Then don’t. Watch it with scores of other dedicated fans at Legends 1291 Sports Pub (Town Square, Waterville Valley, 603/236-4678). The joint offers big-screen viewing, a nice outdoor deck, and plenty of pub grub for scarfing during the commercials.
Dance performances, chamber music, and lectures and readings by big-name authors take place regularly at Silver Center (17 High St., Plymouth, 603/535-2787, www.plymouth.edu/silver [3]), the performance venue for Plymouth State University.
Every October, Waterville Valley Ski Resort celebrates the colors of the season with its Fall Carnival (603/236-8175, www.waterville.com [4], early Oct.). Events include music, midway rides, and eating contests. The best entertainment, however, is provided by the foliage on the surrounding slopes.
