Being the successful artist’s resort that it has become, Ogunquit [1] surprises no one by being home to the splendid Ogunquit Museum of American Art (542 Shore Rd., 207/646-4909, 10:30 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Sat. July–Oct., $7 adults, $5 seniors, $4 students, free children under 12), a museum whose spectacular setting perched on a cliff above the ocean is outdone by the art contained inside.
The excellent collection of American paintings includes watercolors, oils, sculpture, and drawings. Artists such as Eliot O’Hara, Henry Strater, and Isabella Howland might not be household names, but they are well-known and respected in the artists community. In addition to the art within the museum, the gift shop has a range of arts and crafts by local artists for purchase.
Each year, the museum holds the Almost Labor Day Auction, a live auction of local artwork on the first weekend in September.
