Though not exactly off the beaten path (it’s close to everything in Bethel [1] and a quick ride to Sunday River), The Chapman Inn (2 Church St., Bethel, 207/824-2657, www.chapmaninn.com [2], $60–130) manages to serve up some peace and quiet away from the slopes. Still need more incentive? The owners include a dynamite breakfast and all-you-can-eat cookies, all day long. The well-appointed rooms are very good value for the money; if you’re on a budget, however, the inn has an even more economical bunkhouse ($33/night)—and guests there get the same gourmet breakfast.
Restored by its owners to fit the era of its namesake, The Victoria Inn (32 Main St., Bethel, 207/-824-8060, www.thevictoria-inn.com [3], $109–159) is filled and finished with antiques and décor of the Victorian period. Breakfast is included.
In the Sebago area, stay lakefront at The Noble House (81 Highland Rd., Bridgton, 207/647-3733, www.noblehousebb.com [4], $145–275), a prim yellow Victorian bed-and-breakfast filled with fireplaces, grand pianos, and canopy beds. At breakfast, the delicious ham-and-cheese strata, one of the owners’ many specialties, will get your day started on a full stomach.
Sunday River Ski Area’s [5] Jordan Grand Hotel (Sunday River, 207/824-3000, www.sundayriver.com [6], $140–240) is directly off the slopes, and houses a slew of perks and services, including several pools, babysitting, restaurants, and an arcade.
