Hopi Point] thrusts farther into the canyon than any other point on the South Rim [1], offering panoramic views. Across the canyon, below the North Rim [2], you can spot the temples of Osiris, Shiva, Isis, and Horus, named by geologist Clarence Dutton in the 1880s. Dutton, a student of world history and philosophy, named many of the canyon’s peaks for mythological figures.
A mile below, the Colorado River looks like a narrow blue-green band, or reddish-brown if it has been raining. Look for Granite Rapid [3]—it helps to have binoculars—marked by flecks of white.
