Day-to-day administration of the massive LDS Church organization is centered in the 28-story tower (50 E. North Temple St., 801/240-2190, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Fri., until 4:30 p.m. Oct.–Mar.) east of Temple Square [1]. Such a volume of correspondence takes place that the building has its own zip code.
Free tours begin in the main lobby and explain a bit about the work here, but the big attraction is a visit to the 26th-floor observation deck. You’ll see Temple Square and the whole city spread out below like a map. Weather permitting, the valley, Great Salt Lake, and the surrounding mountains stand out clearly.
Tours last about 30 minutes, depending on how long you want to take in the panorama. The main lobby has some noteworthy artwork, including a giant 66- by 16-foot mural of Christ appearing to his apostles just prior to his ascension. Gardens and fountains grace a small park behind the building.
